Every week my girlfriend and I go to dump a load of recycling in these large yellow bins. There has never been anyone there working, as far as can be seen.

Whilst it's great that people are recycling, many of the cans and bottles are of course Coke and Pepsi products. Since these people might care about the environment a little, it seems logical that they'd be more open to listen to us than the average person might. So I knocked up some very simple posters to post when we next go there on Tuesday. The text is underneath the cut.

HI! :)

Glad to see so many people recycling! But we have a little info we thought you might appreciate.

Since you obviously care about the environment, we thought you should know about what certain companies are doing to it. They’ve been naughty, and frankly, we don’t think they deserve our money.

Coca-Cola – The actions of Coke bottling plants in several Indian provinces has led to parched land and polluted water supplies. This has left thousands without nearby access to clean water as well as damaging the environment.

PepsiCo – PepsiCo has in-house animal-testing facilities where it conducts nutritional studies on laboratory rats. It sponsors experiments to test the safety of certain ingredients on animals. PepsiCo also owns the KFC chain, who are frequently charged for the awful conditions they slaughter their chickens in.

PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are also the 4th and 5th biggest corporate sponsors, respectively, of the Bush Republicans. The present administration have done everything they can to oppose action on climate change, including trying to destroy the Kyoto Protocol, the only international treaty designed to tackle carbon emissions.

To read about these and other allegations, see the links below.

Remember to check the backs of various products if you do decide to boycott. They own a lot of products between them.

PS. Dear anyone who might wish to throw us away; we’re just trying to do our bit. But if you must, at least put us in the paper recycling bin. We won’t blame you. :)

[There's then little tearaway strips with www.indiaresource.org, www.killercoke.org and www.boycottbush.org on them.]

If you'd like, I can email the Word document to anyone who'd like it just for an easy bit of activism. Leave a comment if you want me to do that. Copying it from here is another option, but it may get messy.

Sounds great - I like the last bit on the paper recycling bin - some people will defend their favourite beverage to the death... oh ever so literally. :(

I believe that you have an inaccuracy in your statement about Pepsi, regarding their wonership of KFC. KFC is owned by YUM! brands of Louisville Ky, who also own Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, A&W, and Long John Silvers. Pepsi owns Frito-Lay, Gatorade, Tropicana, and Quaker foods.
